The kayak I've built is not a replica of a Greenland kayak, but I did use mainly traditional techniques. At some parts of the building process, especially in the beginning I follow Christopher Cunninghams book (Building the Greenland Kayak). Cunningham in his turn based his book on a book written by H.C. Petersen. Petersen describe his kayak as a "composite of a number of techniques from various parts of Greenland".
My kayak differs from the one Cunningham describes in that it is lower and a bit narrower, but I also used another technique for bending the ribs which give my kayak more volume in the mid section. Some other differences from the Cunningham kayak are the cockpit, I moved the isserfik away back and don't use it as a back rest , just to get more space for body movements. I also used another technique for sewing the skin, with a seam on the middle of the deck.
I have tried to gather a lot of information on different techniques and to use my own judgement to make the right decisions, I have tried to build a kayak that will suit me. I want it to be light, fast and fun to play with!
