The Battle of Antietam was the first major Civil War engagement on Northern soil.  It was also the bloodiest single day in battle in American history.  The battle was a turning point that changed the course of the Civil War.  Antietam not only halted Lee’s invasion of the North but thwarted his efforts to force LIncoln to sue for peace.  The battle sealed the fate of the confederacy.

The Memorial Illumination of Antietam National Battlefield is dedicated the 23,110 soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice  ... their life.  Luminaries are lighted for each and every soldier by over 800 volunteers.
