In a State of Refuge

Growing up in the United States, the concept of needing or seeking a refuge can be quite foreign. My family was part of the lower middle class, and my parents needed to be careful while spending money, however basic safety and security was simply an assumed component for our standard of living. Examining the world of my children, we have increased our standards of living from a financial perspective, but in all practical terms safety and security seems to have become more and more elusive each day. As I write this, Mumbai India has experienced a terrorist attack that in some part is focused on Westerners. Though far away, these events are brought right into our immediate consciousness, our homes, via TV and the Internet.
