For those who didn’t know, my posting about this place on eGullet actually made it on Eater. Never knew my opinion mattered. How flattering!
As for Kampuchea, admittedly, I am not a fan of trendy Asian noodle bars that serve dressed up, over priced Asian noodle soups. But, as I said before, the place has charm, kind of like old world Asian tavern meets modern sensibility. The food is pretty delicious too, although I couldn’t tell you if it’s authentic Cambodian or transplanted interpretations. The grilled cuttlefish is delicious, and the shrimp and onion pancake is nicely executed. I couldn’t have any of the beef noodles, but it smelled rich and flavorful. For those who need a reference point, Gary who had the noodle soup said it’s better than Momofuku.
Service is friendly without being condescending or presumptuous. At this time, Kampuchea is still operating on a limited menu. Starting next year, there will be options for vegetarians and the option to have lunch. Check it out, you may find it more endearing, not to mention bearable, then that other trendy noodle bar in the East Village.
