The play takes place in Oregon in the 1850's and concerns the transformation of the Pontipee brothers from a bunch of wild animals into suitable "husband" material.  This process begins when the eldest brother, Adam Pontipee, goes into town to get himself a bride ("Bless Your Beautiful Hide") and brings home Milly, a tough barmaid who thinks she has married one man ("One Man") when in fact she has 'married' a whole clan.
