Write in the Middle!

Welcome to Write in the Middle
Write in the Middle (“WIM”) was inspired by the recognition that Middle School students are “right in the middle” between childhood and adulthood – a turbulent time, when support, recognition, and channels for personal expression are critical. It is an opportune time to introduce students to the effectiveness of the written word and the power that each of them possesses as writers.

WIM sponsors an annual writing exercise/competition for middle schoolers. Essays are evaluated through a process determined by each participating school to most appropriately meet the needs of the students.  Prizes are awarded to school representatives and include school supplies and gift certificates among other items.  Each student selected by their school and their teacher is also invited to a workshop with local authors and a ceremony to recognize each of the students selected.

The WIM writing exercise/competition is designed to speak to the unique strengths and needs of adolescent writers. In sum it is through the competition that WIM seeks to raise the bar for young writers in Hawai`i and to create a forum where their creative energy and talent can be encouraged.

Updated Procedures
In an attempt to streamline the process for teachers and schools and in order to continue to reach as many students as possible, Write in the Middle has updated the procedures for the 2009-2010 school year.

We would also like to continue to emphasize the process of writing and connect as many students with local authors at the annual writing camp.  As a result, teacher and schools can now work directly with the Write in the Middle team instead of working through the District Offices as in years past. Another change is that school representatives will receive their awards at the Annual Recognition Ceremony and Writing Camp.  Please read the updated procedures carefully and contact your Area Representative (listed above) with any questions.
