“When in 1980 I first experienced the Indian art schools at Baroda and Santiniketan, I was impressed that so rich a painting-culture had already developed. It was, inevitably, a hybrid, emerging out of a long dialogue - between East and West, betweeen Indigenous and International, between "Traditional" and "Modern". Many Indian students seemed better  informed about contemporary art than their British counterparts. My hope is that Nepal (where the great Indian painter Binode Behari Mukherjee once taught) may evolve a sophisticated painting culture of its own - and that's why I wanted to support Celia's brave project.

In my Door, I wanted to bring together three emblems of London - Bearing it on My Back, Carrying  it over My Shoulder, and Winding its River around Me..”
