It has been 23 years from the start of construction through now. The design came to me over the years of my youth. AVEIA has afforded the most amazing lifestyle opportunities. She has been a home, a mode of travel, a magical pastime and my main means of income. We have traveled and worked together in many foreign lands (and islands!). We have leapt from wave crest to wave crest, totally airborne between peaks. Between Galapagos and Marquesas we learned what it is like to do 40 knots on the open sea. South of Minerva Reef we wound up in the eye of a 120 knot cyclone that formed just in front of us in less than 45 minutes. We sailed through the eye of this storm....twice, with the aid of our rotating wingmast. In the end we wound up doing a 10 year circumnavigation of Polynesia. The magic events that have unfolded along the way, things that people are not normally privy to lay eyes upon, the people that have crossed our paths, the amazing sea creatures, the amazing cultures, this is the stuff of legendary dreams. It’s been my life. Letting go is a scary feeling, but exhilarating at the same time. It’s the closing of one long chapter and the opening of a new one. It’s an evolutionary jump of spirit and physical reality.
My one true biggest concern is to pass the torch to the right person. I want to feel that the pride of “AVEIA” is going to live on. It can be a true symbiotic relationship. If you take care of the boat, the boat will take care of you, through thick and thin.
