        The music on this record was recorded in a variety of informal and formal non-public situations between 1967 and 1976. Of particular relevance to our intentions in releasing this record (and also providing a model for future projects of this type) was the “Four Room Session” of March 1973.

          Using the facilities of the University of Iowa Recording Studios, performers were isolated in four completely separate rooms (connected through the control room by microphones and headphones). Following a strict time schedule, the performers grouped and regrouped in the four rooms at fifteen minute intervals (for the first three hours) and ten minute intervals (for the fourth hour). Using nothing but their ears to guide them, in many cases not even knowing the identities of the players in the other rooms, the thirty or so players involved turned in a remarkably varied set of improvisational performances (eighteen in four hours of recording time!
