As many of you know, an article I wrote, Crucial Mac Software: College Edition, made it to the front page of Digg.com. From there all madness broke out. My hits skyrocketed, almost bringing my site down. I had to upgrade my .Mac account in order to keep it online. After Digg, multiple sites featured the article, including, but not limited to del.icio.us, tuaw.com, Lifehacker, HackCollege.com, and a bunch of other news and Mac sites. Thankfully, I had the foresight to take a few screen shots as my stats skyrocketed and then averaged off (about 5x higher than pre-Digg) a month or so later.
So why write this now? Because I just googled myself and found that I have almost succeeded in my goal to beat Willie Morris on Google. I am the third page listed now when you search for Willie Morris. I have even almost made it to the front page when you search for Willie. Pretty impressive considering other famous Willies...Willie Nelson, Wet Willies, Willie from the Simpsons and apparently some guy named Willie Colon.

The Digg Effect. An Extended Look.
My First 200 Hits. Imagine my excitement...and disbelief.
My StatCounter hits after day 1...makes the other days pale in comparison.
After a couple days, tapering off to the extreme...the other sites just can’t generate the traffic that Digg is capable of.
These are stats from one of the last weeks in September...My average before Digg was about 230 hits and 50 unique visitors...Post-Digg, about 500 hits and 300 unique visitors. Thank You Kevin Rose.
A monthly view. Check out the boost between July and September. 3x the amount of hits after the Digg effect had supposedly worn off.
Shortly after being dugg, I got an email from Apple and had to upgrade my .Mac account to accommodate the traffic. 4/5 of the bandwidth for August was used up in 2 days.
Again, you can see the Digg effect didn’t just wear off in a few days. It has had lasting effects and more than doubled my site’s traffic over a month later.
1992. The final Digg count as of 4:30 am October 9, 2006.
