This undergraduate course is a critical exploration of Buddhist philosophy as it relates to contemporary film and media in a global context. Buddhism has been a highly influential tradition and philosophy engaged by filmmakers, theorists and filmgoers in recent years. For example, Buddhist themes have impacted the narrative structures and characterizations in recent martial arts, horror and science fiction films from Kung Fu Hustle to The Matrix, while recent scholarly writing has linked Buddhism to postmodernism and narrative theory, and fan websites have explored the religious, cultural and philosophical implications of Buddhism in relation to various popular films and television programs. Lectures, discussions and screenings will address various Buddhist concepts, practices and themes in relation to storytelling, style, form, genre, digital culture and theories of postmodernism. Screenings may include: Groundhog Day, Running on Karma, V for Vendetta, Wit, Lost in Translation, Mandala, The Cup, Casshern and The Matrix.
