For more than twenty years I held on to the photos. They survived several moves and a few major purges I performed as an effort to trim the clutter from my studio. Strange as it may seem they had become precious to me. So I kept them safe, pulling them out on now and then and imagining that these four brothers were in-fact members of the brilliant Zeno family and that Harry Zeno (the heavy set one) had invented a camera capable of taking pictures of itself and those operating it.
Then about two years ago while designing a series of sci-fi magazine covers I created a robot with a kind of vintage look about him. I had been interested in incorporating my robot creations into photographs and he seemed the most likely candidate. But I wasn’t quite sure about what type of situation I wanted to see him in. Then it hit me, the photos of Harry and his brothers were perfect. And before the first image was completed the story of a robot called Task and his creators was born. And in the months since, I have greatly enjoyed chronicling the adventures of Task Zeno in Confessions of a Mechanical Man, and participating in the evolution of his universe.
