Amy forwarded me today a blog for some reason that I’ve managed to overlook: Shorpy. It is a photography blog dedicated to historic imagery. There is a good selection of Dorothea Lange’s Great Depression era imagery. All beautiful, but this image in particular stands out. The simple shaded, non-directional light so uniformly lights up the sad face of this beautiful young woman. She provides just enough of the surroundings to provide a sense of place, a sense of poverty and desperation.
I’ve been spending a bit of time on wildlife and travel portraiture web pages recently and have been shocked by the recipe imagery that is the norm. The images are lovely, with clean backgrounds, sharp with good poses and postures, perfect in every technical respect and BORING. Seeing these images by Dorothea Lange are the medicine for what ails me.
