Take Time to Smell the Baked Goods
I’m well aware that many people find it odd that I go to Walt Disney World as often as I do and wonder how in the world I’m not tired of going to an amusement park all the time. My answer? Walt Disney World is not an amusement park.
Because we go so often, we have time to do what others can not, and that is to take time to smell the baked goods. Especially at the Magic Kingdom.
Did you ever wonder found it hard to walk past the bakery on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom without going in an buying one of their over priced muffins? It may have had something to do with the fact that bakery smells are piped out to the street to lure you in there, so don’t blame yourself. In fact, it’s the little things like this that make me think that Main Street is my favorite “attractions” in WDW. And there isn’t a single ride there.
It doesn’t just smell good, it sounds good too. Maybe you have to be my age to get a kick out of the songs from “The Music Man” but when I am walking around while “The Wells Fargo Wagon” is playing, there’s a little spring in my step. And at night at closing, all the classic Disney music surrounds you.
If it is too noisy you might miss some of the sounds, like those coming from the second story window on “Center Street” (right turn off Main Street). Listen closely at the window that says “Singing Lessons” and “School of Dance” and you will hear a young voice practicing her scales and the sound of tap dancing.
If you are like me and think this is all just too cute, then you’ll want to check out the schedule for the entertainment on Main Street (http://pages.prodigy.net/stevesoares/mk/mk.htm . There are the Dapper Dans, a barbershop quartet, and the “inhabitants” of the town, Mayor Weaver, the town gossip, a reporter for the town newspaper and a socialite who wander around and interact with guests. (these folks circulate every 20 minutes or so.)
Main Street used to be more like a real Main Street, but sadly it is becoming increasingly like one big gift shop. There used to be lots of little shops that sold more than t-shirts, but if you look around you can still find the remnants of them.
For instance, the Main Street Cinema used to be a real movie theater that was wonderful to slip into on a hot day. Now, in the t-shirt shop that says “Main Street Cinema” you can find a cartoon playing way back in there behind the t-shirts.
The Barber Shop has been moved to a less visible location too, but it’s still there and it is awfully fun to stop by and see if any young princes or princesses are getting their first haircuts.
And there used to be a magic shop and an arcade, but those too are gone. Some of the arcade games have been relocated to the train station and they look to me like they are actual antiques.
For me the most important thing on Main Street is the fireworks show, Wishes, and the flight of Tinkerbell. The first time I saw her and realized that she was actually flying above me - I cried. I couldn’t help it! I guess that was one of my really “magical moments” ,as they say. But there are plenty of those on Main Street at the Magic Kingdom.
