Sawyer Finishes 3rd in 100 Lapper

The  East vs West Bottoms Up 100 Lap race was held Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway.   The event was one of the biggest races of the season in both payoff and as a double points for the drivers. The race purse was over $9,150.00 with additional incentives donated by individuals and businesses for an additional $1,275.00.  [note- final total purse may be greater than mentioned above]

Twenty-two cars showed up to compete in the evenings 100 lap main event but only twenty-one started the race after one blew a motor during practice session.

Sawyer started in the tenth position after finishing second in his heat race.   The front row saw the #2 of Darrel Hood sitting on the pole with the #38 of Nick Sylvester on the outside.  Hood led the pack coming out of the first turn.  The early running order saw #2-Hood, #04 - Randolf, and #38-Sylvester as the top three with the first yellow being thrown on lap 22.  The green flag was thrown again  and  drivers swapped positions for the next eight laps when a second yellow was thrown on lap 30.  The 100 lap race would have yet ten more yellows before the checkered would be waved.  Hood was leading again after swapping positions with Randolph, but on lap 49 Nick Sylvester would take over the lead as the #2 of Hood began to fall off the pace.  Lap 55 saw yet another yellow and Sawyer had now moved his #98 up to fifth. A red flag was flew on lap 71 when the #5 car out of Manteca caught fire on the front stretch. After the car was taken off to the pits the drivers would see another six laps of racing under the yellow flag as track officials cleared debris off the racetrack. Lap 80 would see the #36 spinning and then being sent to the pits because of the two spin rule.  Lap 89  was the final yellow of the evening and  at this time Sawyer had worked his way to third place.  In the final 11 laps the top three  were #38, #04, #98 with  fourth through sixth swapping positions as #2, #27, and #32 battled to stay in the top five.  When the checkered fell the final finish was as follows:

1. #38 Nick Sylvester 100 laps
