Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World

This image is of a silver-adorned conch shell from Tibet  The heron has been composited in as has the section of a Tibetan thangka lurking there in the background.  I chose this image to bring attention to the plight of Tibet which has been ravaged by the Chinese for over 50 years while the world community sits idly by seemingly uncaring and unwilling to do anything about it.  Too bad Tibet doesn’t have something the world wants. like oil, ‘cause you can bet something would be done then.   In recent weeks, the Chinese have killed a number of monks who have been protesting in Lhasa, estimates of the deaths range from 10 to 100, but the numbers are not important, it’s the fact that it’s allowed to happen at all.  Lhasa has been placed under a lock down evicting all foreigners and making it possible to carry out even more atrocities unchecked.

Meanwhile, back in Beijing, China is preparing to welcome the world to this summer’s Olympic games.  Could this not be used as an opportunity to put some pressure on China to undo the wrongs they’ve been committing against Tibet for the past half century?  On a personal level, I plan to do my own little boycott by refusing to watch the games while encouraging everyone I know to do the same.

The song of the day is  Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.  An odd choice you’re thinking?  Yeah, maybe, but the whole Tibetan thing is kind of depressing so I thought I’d offer a song of peace and hope.  This song never fails to cheer me up and if you’ve never heard it then you’re missing out so give it a listen by checking out this YouTube video.  I also think this song reflects the overall optimism of the Tibetan people and their leader in exile, the Dalai Llama.
