James Watson came to Los Angels before the turn of the 20th Century with a love for photography.  Photographing 4 masted schooners in San Pedro Harbor, Buffalo Bill in a 1904 LA  parade, and the bombing of the LA Times building in 1910.  Inspiring two of his 6 sons, Coy and George Watson with the photography bug, George became the first staff photographer of the LA Times in 1917, and he headed the LA bureau of Acme News pictures until the end of WWll. Coy  worked as a special effects man and assistant Director with Douglas Fairbanks and Mack Sennett in the silent films of early Edendale, and Hollywood.  Coy’s six sons, Coy Jr., Harry, Bill, Garry, Delmar, and Bobs followed  in the photographic tradition as they worked on the major news papers, wire services, television news stations, and as commercial photographers from the1930’s thru the 1980’s.  James Watson’s great-grandson,  Daniel,  currently works in news and commercial photography in Los Angeles and manages the WATSON FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE where more than a century of vintage images prints, negatives, and movie footage are now housed in Glendale.  Millions of images documenting the history of Los Angeles  (most of the images unseen since their original publication )  and are now available for private, editorial, educational, and commercial use for the first time as a brand new century begins!
