Introduction
The Will Rogers Memorial Museums in Claremore, OK are dedicated to keeping alive the memory of one of our nation’s great personal treasures--Will Rogers. The dedication of the staff is exemplified in their keeping of a promise made to Betty Rogers, Will’s widow, in 1938--to keep the museum open every day and free of charge to visitors. In this spirit, the Memorial is offering “Will Rogers was not just a cowboy” to Oklahoma public schools as a no-fee program during the 2006-07 school year.
The title of the program aims to challenge a too-frequent misconception of Will Rogers--that he was just one more Oklahoma cowboy, an uncultured fellow who lived in a time far removed from our own and who is now mostly to be remembered for several humorous comments he made about America in the 1920s or 1930s. Will was a cowboy, of course. It was one of the many aspects of his complex identity. But he was much, much more--a family man, a writer, a movie star and stage actor, a radio personality, a widely-read newspaper columnist, a world traveler and adventurer, an early booster of aviation, a political commentator and public spokesman, a defender of the common man, a genius of the human spirit. To lose the breadth his legacy would be tragic.
The broad reach of the Rogers legacy is the primary business of the Will Rogers Memorial Museums in Claremore. I hope you will plan a time to visit there soon. In the meantime, have a look at information on their website.

The program
“Will Rogers was not just a cowboy” is primarily intended for Oklahoma history classes at the upper elementary, high school, or middle school level. The program combines lecture, multi-media, living history, and discussion in a presentation that can be adapted to a 45-75 minute session with up to three hundred students. The presentation addresses many of the specific Oklahoma Department of Education’s PASS objectives for Oklahoma history and does it in a way that is engaging for students.
