Asteraceae (Daisy/Sunflower Family)
Compositae
This huge family has a great variety of forms. As a compromise between the needs of the layman and of those with more botanical training I am grouping some of the types together both by name and by appearance. This only approximates the natural classification. Click image to visit page.
Daisy Type flowers
Asters, daisies and fleabanes have few to many ray flowers surrounding a central area of tiny disk flowers.
Sunflower Type flowers
Generally large yellow showy flowers with big "petals".
Lettuce Type flowers
Only ray flowers ("petals") of various sizes. Dandelion is the most familiar of these.
Thistle Type flowers
No ray flowers ("petals"), but many of the small disk flowers are quite elaborate and showy.
Shrubby (Sage, Rabbitbrush ... )
Woody stems that overwinter. Can be small (few inches) or very large (>10 feet tall)
Tiny Heads
Clusters of small heads, each containing many very small flowers. Often lack "petals" and are not showy.
Da..ed Yellow Composites (DYC)
Many confusing types that amply justify the group name.
Miscellaneous
Various odd-shaped flower heads that are hard to classify.
