Rally to reinstate front gate security at Fort Totten attracts hundreds of protesters

Fort Totten, Bayside, NY (Mar. 8, 2009) -- A rally was held on Saturday, March 7, 2008 to protest the termination of gate security at Fort Totten. Hundreds of concerned individuals from all parts of Queens were on hand to express their outrage.

A spokesperson for the Bay Terrace Community Alliance (BTCA), told the crowd that the "Fire Department had betrayed the community by breaching their agreement to provide gate security." A portion of Fort Totten was gifted to FDNY through a federal conveyance. FDNY had been providing protection services since 1999.

Also on hand to lend their support were Congressman Anthony Weiner, State Senator Toby Stavisky, State Senator Frank Padavan, NYC Council Member Peter F. Vallone Jr. and NYC Council Member Jim Gennaro. They all spoke about the importance of Fort Totten and the necessity to ensure a safe, secure environment for visitors and workers.

Community leaders vowed to continue fighting until gate security is restored.

COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS DANGER

The Bay Terrace Community Alliance (BTCA) wholeheartedly supports the concept of a tram to transport visitors on Fort Totten Park. As a matter of fact, the BTCA was one of the early voices advocating for a park that would be accessible to all users regardless of age or physical condition.

We continue to encourage the Parks Department to make use of vehicles that are safe and practical for the purpose of transporting people through out Fort Totten's 49 acres. However, the Bay Terrace Community Alliance strongly opposes the placement of compressed natural gas storage tanks on the grounds of Fort Totten Park.

Presently, in addition to remaining an Army Base, Fort Totten is also home to specialized Police and Fire units. At this time of heightened alerts due to threats of terrorism, compressed natural gas storage tanks could seriously jeopardize the safety of Fort Totten and the surrounding community.

The Bay Terrace Community Alliance urges all concerned to go back to the table and come up with a more sensible course of action.

LITTLE BAY COMFORT STATION

We will soon have a comfort station in Little Bay Park. At a Community Board 7 (CB 7) Parks Committee meeting, representatives of the Department of Parks & Recreation presented final plans for these long awaited rest rooms.

The comfort station exterior will be a combination red brick intended to match the buildings on Fort Totten and a glazed, aqua colored brick to represent the bay. As this project dealt with a challenging location due to the high water table and close proximity to the bay, we were especially encouraged that the project designers made sure the surrounding environment would be protected. Work is expected to begin in the fall/winter of 2008 and take approximately 12 months to complete. Councilmember Avella and Mayor Bloomberg funded most of the $1.3 million price tag.

The Bay Terrace Community Alliance (BTCA) was at one time the lone voice calling for the construction of this facility. Thanks to the BTCA's relentless efforts, a Comfort Station in Little Bay Park will soon be a reality. By working together, nothing is out of reach.
