Sorry, no big version of this one until I get a better photo. This is Norse goddess Hel. She was my second oil painting on a twin canvas with Legba.
She is a different kind of crossroads spirit closely akin to the greek Hekate. Hel is depicted as half beautiful woman and half skeleton . In this image she represents the blending of my 1st and 12th houses where I have Pluto and Uranus. Pluto’s symbol is at the top of the cross contraption. Uranus’ is formed by the cross in front of Hel’s nose, the fish tongue and the phoenix with the fish eye standing in for the circle. A serpent winds around a sort of spine shape indicating the kundalini as well as the substantial portion of my first house that resides in Scorpio. The semi-self portrait on the left represents my ascendant and has horns representing my Capricorn sun. Hel herself, divided as she is also stands in for my Gemini moon in the house of death, 8. The black cross also represents the greek Themis known to the Egyptians as Maat. These goddesses of justice, equilibrium and social harmony share some qualities with the zodiac sign Libra, where my natal ascendant, Pluto and Uranus reside. The fish just seemed like the thing that needed to go there at the bottom, but conveniently also stands in as representative of the 12th house.
