City Council Hits New Anti-Business Low

By Walter Moore, Candidate for Mayor of L.A.

Farmers erect scarecrows -- as the name implies -- to scare away crows so they won’t eat the crops.

Mayor Villaraigosa and the City Council enact ordinances that serve a similar purpose:  they scare away businesses.

But now the City Council has hit a new low:  your elected officials are calling for a boycott of local businesses, not for violating any laws, but because their owners are exercising their legal right to contest a “living wage” ordinance.

That ordinance is unconstitutional, in my opinion as an attorney, because it would require only a handful of businesses, in only one part of town, to pay higher wages than any other business in town.  Whether it’s unconstitutional or not, however, City Hall should “punish” business owners just because they want a court to rule on the legality of an ordinance.

With City Hall exhibiting this kind of overt hostility towards law-abiding businesses, why in the world would any sane board of directors authorize construction of a new factory in our city?  Why indeed would anyone open a business here if there were any alternative venue?

We need a mayor who understands that business is not the enemy. Businesses provide employment, along with goods and services that people want. If you want a mayor who realizes we need to stop scaring away prospective employers, contribute to my campaign today, would you?
