Does Villaraigosa’s Campaigning For Hillary Violate The City Charter?
By Walter Moore, Candidate for Mayor of Los Angeles, WalterMooreForMayor.com
Did you know that serving as the Mayor of Los Angeles is actually a full-time job? Turns out, it’s not a part-time job, and it’s not an honorary position, like being the “Mayor of Hollywood.”
The City Charter expressly requires our Mayor and each City Council Members to “devote their entire time to duties related to their offices,” and forbids them to “accept any compensation . . . for their services” other than their City salary and benefits.
I mention this because I couldn’t help noticing the Mayor on TV, night after night, campaigning for Hillary in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and here in California.
Do you think YOU could manage to do all that traveling and campaigning and hold down a full-time job? Me, neither.
I haven’t seen any time-cards or expense reports from Villaraigosa showing how much time he spends doing his job versus campaigning. Nor have I seen any expense reports or other documents to see who is paying for all the airfare, hotels and meals.
Perhaps someone in our Fourth Estate would be kind enough to send Villaraigosa a public records request to determine whether we taxpayers, as his employer, are getting his “entire time,” and whether he’s receiving compensation (e.g., free airfare and lodging) in return for his services as a spokesman and co-chairman of Clinton’s campaign.
If you elect me as your Mayor, I will work full-time at the job and account for my time. Having been a business trial lawyer for over 20 years -- and having held a variety of time-clock type jobs as a teenager -- I’m accustomed to accounting for my time down to six-minute increments.
