We had a great time in NYC over Fall Break this year! We were able to see over 50 contemporary artists’ exhibitions in Chelsea in addition to a few in SoHo. On friday night, we took advantage of Target sponsoring free admission to MoMA from 4-8 pm, and scoured the collection galleries of architecture and design, drawings, painting and sculpture, and the special exhibitions on display. Very good and inexpensive food punctuated our days and nights in NYC ranging from hot dogs from street vendors outside The Guggenheim to homemade Ukranian in The Lower East Side to fresh-made pasta at Il Corallo Trattoria in SoHo. Of course, there were frequent trips to the ever-present Starbucks. Saturday we had the pleasure of seeing an exhibition of Zaha Hadid’s work at The Guggenheim Museum, a smorgasbord of paintings, drawings, models, and furniture by this influential architect. Following the show at The Guggenheim, we walked south down Madison Avenue to Gagosian Gallery for an exhibition of 25 years of drawings by British artist Damien Hirst. We then took the subway down to Lower Manhattan for a walk on Brooklyn Bridge and then walked the short distance to Ground Zero. Afterwards, we broke off into groups for a few hours and everyone explored on their own. Later, we met back back up in Times Square and enjoyed “Pots and Pans”, an energetic, lively guy playing an assortment of buckets, pots and pans. A few members of our group even got out in front of the crowd and danced a bit! And yes, we did get it on camera... . Thankfully, the rainy weather was a no-show, so we were able to fully enjoy NYC and all there is to soak up there.
