Rise Above Plastic (RAP) for Sea Turtles
Rise Above Plastic (RAP) for Sea Turtles
August 27, 2008
On September 2nd, 5actions.com launches. It’s a campaign connected to the new film Battle in Seattle (opening September 19th). The film, which describes the 1999 WTO protest in Seattle, will be a tremendous vehicle for this international campaign. Read my short film review HERE.
5actions.com invites activists to participate in one or more (all 5!) actions related to environmental and social justice issues.
With the help of mega-rapper Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000 of Oukast) OceanRevolution.org will represent the “Wild Oceans” action asking people to “Rise Above Plastic (RAP) for Sea Turtles”. The action we are promoting is to help people remove wasteful plastic from our lives wherever possible.
Andre plays the sea turtle activist, Django, in the film. He’s really great and is personally committed to sea turtle protection. Have you ever seen a Hollywood film where a lead character (played by an insanely popular rapper) intelligently discusses saving sea turtles, turtle excluder devices (TEDs) and why saving sea turtles matters? Battle in Seattle does.
Save Our Shores will be offering kits that will make it super easy to ride yourself of unneeded plastic items. They make great gifts too!
In a recent post I described new information on impacts of plastic on sea turtles.
Our approach to this campaign is to support and build on what many other orgs, such as Algalita and Surfrider, have already started and to help grow the RAP network.
Take some friends to see the film Battle in Seattle, learn about the problem of plastic in the ocean, pick an action, and let your friends and colleagues know...
