Our ocean is becoming a place full of plastic as every minute we throw away more than a million oil-based plastic bags, consume mountains of plastic bottles and heaps of
LIVE BLUE: Emotion + Reason for our Ocean
August 31, 2007
Lots of conversations I’ve had recently hinge around the apparent need to pit emotion against reason. My academic and capitalist friends promote the later and my activist friends, through their words, actions and body language, the former.
I hear professors guiding their students to beware the pitfalls of advocacy and to employ unbiased science. And business-minded, invisible-hand worshipers

Delicate
August 23, 2007
I keep coming back to the word "delicate" for some reason.
The Earth in all it's evolving robust complexity really isn't delicate at all--as Oren Lyons eloquently and powerfully points out in the film 11th Hour:
“If we choose to eradicate ourselves from this earth, by whatever means, the earth goes nowhere. And in time, it will regenerate, and all the lakes will be pristine. The rivers,

Bridge hut
I’ve built a high little hut
At the nape of the Golden Gate (atop the grandest red tower)
With windows to the east and west,
A bookshelf to the south, and a door.
There’s a jug of water
On the small bedside table,
A coarse rug for my boots,
And a peg for my raincoat.
The walls are northern driftwood,
The roof is tin with moss,
And the iron stove keeps
Me warm when the fog rolls

Trees: W.S. Merwin

Trees
I am looking at trees
they may be one of the things I will miss
most from the earth
though many of the ones I have seen
already I cannot remember
and though I seldom embrace the ones I see
and have never been able to speak
with one
I listen to them tenderly
their names have never touched them
they have stood round my sleep
and when it was forbidden to climb them
they have carried me in

Al has a big, big show this weekend. A global network of rock and roll concerts sure to put the cool back into Global Warming and the sexy back into Climate Change.
The Al Gore--Live Earth shows are getting attention and making some noise.
There are the critics: “Oh, Al! stop being so Hollywood.” or “You know, all those amps use a LOT of energy.” or “Al’s just running for president...of the

I’ve been getting reports, seems like daily, from colleagues working in all corners of the ocean about warming-related changes leading to hungry ocean wildlife. Whales, seabirds, polar bears, seals, and on...
I’ve written and said this before, but here it is again: climate change is an ocean issue. We’ll see the impacts of global warming FIRST in the ocean. We are seeing it now. These
