A song for fathers

In keeping with the holiday theme of making gifts...I wrote, strummed and sang this little song for my fathers, Wallace and Jack.  And for other fathers who work hard at it, like my friend Tim and my brothers.  And for everyone with a father.  So, this song is for you, too.

Father song

(capo second)

G-C-G-C

Am-D

My father taught me this awkward dance
It’s part hustle and part circumstance
My father taught me this awkward dance
It’s true, yes it’s true

My father taught me to sing the blues
He just didn’t tell me who to sing them to
My father taught me to sing the blues
It’s true, yes it’s true

My father taught me to catch and throw
Then how to stay and when to go
My father taught me to catch and throw
It’s true, yes it’s true

(break)

Some fathers know about everything
Some just quietly do their thing
Some father’s know everything
It’s true, yes it’s true

Now I’m a father and I can can tell
My dad did his job very well
Now I’m a father and I can tell
It’s true, yes it’s true

My father taught me this awkward dance
It’s part hustle and part circumstance
My father taught me this awkward dance
It’s true, yes it’s true

(repeat chorus)

J,

Lovely song and lyrics.  Oddly enough, it made me think of my dad and the love and passion we both share for turtles, and how that common interest has brought us so close.  I remember as a kid we spent our summers in Maine catching painted turtles and my father and I would mark them with nail polish just like you did as a kid.  As a freshman in high school I vividly remember when we built our first "turtle pen" in my backyard.  We started out with a spotted turtle I found in a mall parking lot.  The following summer we built an incubator out of styraphoam, some scrap pieces of wood, and a water heater and succesfully incubated our first clutch of turtle eggs.  In any case, thanks for the gift and the wonderful memories it brought back.

Happy holidays to you and your family.  Keep inspiring.

Standing on my fathers shoes as we danced the dance of life...this is the memory your tune has given me. Martha Graham once said "Dance is the hidden language of the soul". Thank you for sharing your song and your dance.
