Sea turtle anniversary

Adelita’s Journey

This year is the 10-year anniversary of the transoceanic journey of a loggerhead sea turtle we named Adelita.  She was released on August 10th, 1996 and tracked until August 13th, 1997 (view some images here).

Tracking Adelita over 12,000 km across the entire Pacific Ocean, from Mexico to Japan, for over a year represented several paradigm-shifting breakthoughs in our understanding of the interconnectedness of the ocean, the animals that live in it, the technology available to research and communication, and the people along the ocean’s shores.  It also reminded us of the need for international collaboration while working with endangered species.

During the year of tracking Adelita, we shared her journey with millions of people around the world, a legacy that lives on at seaturtle.org.  At this 10 year anniversary we have several projects underway to recall her journey, including a ambassadorial trip to Japan for the 17th Japanese Sea Turtle Symposium, a PBS-Nature-BBC documentary on Pacific loggerhead turtles, a special symposium on tracking ocean wildlife, and an animated film.

I’ll post updates here on all of these projects.
