Want Better Users? . . .

I am a retired engineer who has become an author.

My professional interest is in advising organizations on how to design products and services to be user-centered. This means that the central focus of the design is the end user, and not the technology, the price, or the convenience of the supplier. Thus, end-user terminology should be used, not systems jargon; recovery from human error should be easy, without obscure error messages or starting over; and user interaction should follow what you would expect, not the way systems designers think. This user centrality has influenced the sort of writing that I have done. I summarize this philosophy with the branding phrase Want Better Users? . . .

I grew up in Nova Scotia, was educated in Halifax, and now live with my wife and a number of our children in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
