Located high up on the Helshoogte Pass on the Simonsberg Mountain sits Vuurberg, formally known as Helshoogte Vineyards. This is serious red wine country with the likes of Thelema, Tokara, Delaire and Rustenburg as neighbors. Owner and winemaker Sebastiaan Klaassen, with the help of Miles Mossop of Tokara fame, has taken this young winery, established in 2002, 1st bottling in 2003, and started the creation of the Vuurberg label with the goal to equal its well positioned neighbors as one of the of the better producers in the Cape. With nine hectares planted, six to red Bordeaux varietals, the vineyards go high up the Simonsberg Mountain, planted at between 300-450 meters above sea level on gravelly, infertile soil. There is a minimalist approach to everything, with the vineyard given the greatest respect. The grapes are hand picked and hand sorted and the cellar is gravity fed, no pumping takes place.
