Reproduction of the Lyon's builders plate
December 30, 2008

This builder’s plate was sold on Ebay on December 19, 2008 to Paul Harr ! This auction was for a cast iron full-size replica of a steam locomotive builder’s plate used on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad’s “Lyon and “Ormsby” steam locomotives.  The engines were built in 1869 by H.J. Booth & Co., at the Union Iron Works located in San Francisco, CA.  The original locomotives were the first two to run on the V&T and they were scrapped in the 1890’s.

The Mason City & Clear Lake Electric Railroad Historical Society, Inc., of Mason City, Iowa, a non-profit organization, will use the funds generated from this sale to complete construction of a full size replica of the “Lyon”, a project which began at the Strasburg Rail Road in Strasburg, PA in the early 1990’s and is now nearly 70% complete.
