ABOUT ME
I started painting 4 years ago. I am self taught. However, I have been a collector of art for over 30 years. I have sold over 65 paintings in the 4 years to private and public collections in, among others, NY, NJ, MA, FL, CA, VA, CT, PA, MD, and GA. I have sold from my own galleries and from my studio.
Currently, I am thrilled to be working from my new large studio at my home in Linville, NC at Grandfather Golf and Country Club on Hwy 105 near Boone and Banner Elk. Come visit when you are in the High Country. My studio is open every day.
I am happy to send paintings on approval. If there is a painting you would like to have in a different size or a different color palette or a completely new idea, I am happy to do a commissioned painting. Just email me or give me a call and I can give you a quote. There is no obligation to purchase the painting when it is completed unless it satisfies you.
I also am happy to work with INTERIOR DESIGNERS. Please call me at 772-349-1569 or email me at vickibrown@mac.com for further information.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I paint with oils and acrylics on canvas and panels, watercolor on paper and encaustic bees wax on wood panels. I love painting in all mediums. All offer their own challenges and fulfill different artistic visions. Common to all however are the color and textures which define the emotional response to the images.
My oil and acrylic paintings explore the abstract in nature, the landscape, and the figure. It is all about the color, the form and the textures. Although not actual places or people, I am evoking images and feelings of places, or circumstances in which you have been, or perhaps, want to be in your imagination. They may be places or feelings of special meaning to you or to me.
My watercolor figurative work is created on hand molded 100% cotton paper. In order to capture the essence of the subject, I paint dry on dry with undiluted watercolors picked up with print rollers and eyedroppers. This technique keeps the strokes fluid and spare. Using eye droppers, and various sizes and edges of the rollers, I can create a variety of lines: thin, thick, curvaceous, short or long. These lines, along with the models, the lighting, and the incredible variety of colors form the basis of my watercolor figurative paintings.
There is great beauty in the human figure. I am fascinated that gestures can be expressed with a single stroke of color. I look for the rhythms and the flow of the body. My figures are strong, beautiful, proud, and sensuous. Although, seeming to be vulnerable, they are not. Energy is at the heart of my paintings. My figures seem captured in a moment in time, ready to resume their life when you turn away.
Encaustic painting is painting with hot bees wax, oil pigment, and damar tree resin onto a rigid surface, usually wood panels. It is an ancient style of painting going back to Egyptian times. This medium allows me to develop textures and collages within the painting which cannot be done in oils. There is a luminescence and three dimensionality in these paintings due to the reflection of the light off the surface. The surface may be completely smooth or filled with voids depending upon the method employed to fuse the wax leading to incredibly varied paintings.
