Music: Andante for solo viola da gamba by Georg Philipp Telemann
The Viola da gamba by Joachim Tielke
Hamburg, 1683

The story may not be quite complete, but what little we know about the history of this instrument is overwhelming...! This viola da gamba has been in the hands of soloists since - as far as we now know - 1905, when Christian Döbereiner, Munich, posed with it. It passed on to the very notable violist and violoncellist, Eva Heinitz sometime early in the 20th C. In 1996 Eva Heinitz agreed to sell me her playing partner for several decades, stating that it was her wish that the viol remain in the hands of a player and not be placed behind glass in a museum, never to be heard again. It is a great honour to have this illustrious instrument in the collection, where it is often used for performance and recording.
