Family Reunion IV
Johann Georg and Mathias Thir

A prestigeous imperial house the likes of the Habsburgs, with its proverbially lavish musical establishment, may have well occasionally imported the best from abroad, but it also fostered indigenous instrument-making to such a extent, that its craftsmen were able to earn universal acclaim, both at home and beyond the imperial confines, throughout the 17th and 18th Centuries, for the fine instruments they created. In the field of instrument-making, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Vienna and Prague have nothing to envy other metropoles: the luthiers serving the Imperial Court produced masterfully crafted instruments of the highest order.

Johann Georg Thir may be rightfully considered one of the finest of the Austrian makers, Coming from a distinguished family of luthiers in Vienna and Pressburg, Johann Georg grew to become the leading master in 18th Century Vienna. His brother, Mathias, followed also the family tradition.

In the collection:
Johann Georg Thir: violin, viola, violoncello, five-string violone
Mathias Thir: violin, viola
