“Our movement is gaining strength, very fast,” stated Rogelio, a vendor from Brooklyn as he looked at all the members preparing to march on May 1st, 2009. Street vendors from the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn gathered at Union Square on a stormy day and marched down 5th Avenue to Federal Plaza. “No storm will stop us from marching, none of us can go home, we march in the rain!” yelled Berta to get the blood flowing of members ready to march.

Jorman Nuñez, a community activist, and running for council member of the 14th District marched with us to make the statement that he supports the increase of permits and the rights of street vendors in New York City.

Rafael Samanez, director and organizer of VAMOS Unidos states, “It has been an awe inspiring time and an honor to work with my community and to see our organization grow like this in only 2 years.” He furthered stated, “Our members here today are fully informed of the street vendor issues, know why they are marching, and understand that they must go beyond just marching, but develop as leaders and that takes work and time.”
