Theosophist

‘Tat tvam asi’ is Sanskrit for ‘Thou Art That’, which beautifully expresses the essential premise of theosophy: the fundamental unity of all life.

I am a bundle of conditioned characteristics, but I am also one with you and every other.

However, as our multiplicity and radical uniqueness are as profoundly important as our oneness, I’m happy to share with you that:

My body breathed its first breath 32 years ago in Natchez, Mississippi while the Sun, Moon and Ascendant were all in Aquarius. My money comes from working in the arts in Chicago, and I sleep in an apartment I share with my brother in Wheaton. No one makes me laugh as hard or often as he.

The apartment is swollen with book, movies and music reflecting a range of interests including philosophy, world religions, science, language and the arts.

It is a pleasure to meet you.

Walking the Path
I often feel I am a microcosm of the human search for the good, the true and the beautiful, a metaphorical overtone of the ontogeny recapitulating phylogeny chord. I am laboratory and crucible, a nexus of spiritual activity, the stage for an unfolding multileveled drama.

I seek to live by the motto Satyan nasti paro dharmah, ‘There is no religion/duty higher than truth’, and long ago submitted myself to a higher will. I fail frequently, but as Saul Bellow wrote, “Suffering is the surest burster of spirit’s sleep.” I believe in courting the full catastrophe, in embracing the beautiful disaster, in replying to Nietzsche’s demon with a big ol’ ‘Hell yeah.’

It is a lonely and dangerous path, a true razor’s edge, but it is the only one I know.

This site is not about theosophy. Please see the links to the right, or the Further page, to explore this rich and complex tradition. This is about my personal experience of trying to live theosophically, a travel log of my walk along the path.

Blessings to you.
Chris
