Design from Half a World Away: The efficacy of remote research

As the Indian economy continues to grow, its transformation through design necessitates increased collaboration between designers in India and their counterparts abroad. In this session we will discuss the results of a course sponsored by Honeywell, taught concurrently at the Institute of Design (Chicago) and IIT Mumbai, focused on increasing the footprint of health care workers in rural India.

One of the most interesting outcomes of the collaboration was that students essentially 'proved' the efficacy of remote research. This will be illustrated by way of a comparison of design concepts developed by students in Mumbai and those of their counterparts half a world away in Chicago.
