Design for East and West
In his book, Geography of Thought, Richard Nisbett suggest a fundamental difference between the mental make up of people from the west and the East. While the western mind, mirrored by the ideas of Aristotle, believes in the concept of agency (one’s ability and responsibility to control one’s destiny), the eastern mind, represented by the thinking of Confucius, believes in the concept of Harmony (one’s ability and responsibility to fit within the larger world). As the west and the east come closer through globalization, it would be important to understand what it will take to learn to work with and design for each-other. What are the challenges and where will the opportunities be?
