Existential Boogie © 2005

I owe so many people so much for helping me on this tune. It’s sort of my first “big production number.” I recorded it at my studio here in Baltimore. Ken Gutberlet (who plays dobro on the song) heard me play the song at a Baltimore Songwriters song circle soon after I had written it. I was doing it as a folk song. In his ultra casual way, he asked that since the lyrics refer to a boogie, shouldn’t it be a boogie rather than a folk song. Well, Duh!

From there I brought in Ed Kaitz to play harmonica and Carey Ziegler to play bass. I played the guitars and programmed the drums using BFD.

As frequently happens, the song took on a life of its own. I was quite stunned to find that I had written a country song and even more stunned to hear where the song took my vocal style. When Carey heard the final mix he said that to perform this song in public, I needed to grow a ZZ Top beard, get some Cheap Sun Glasses and a cowboy hat, maybe a duster for a final accessory.

As you can see, I got the hat. I found it in a Las Vegas western wear store called Cow Town Boots. I bought a great pair of cowboy boots from their Tucson store years ago. Haven’t found a good duster yet.
