5,500 miles. This is the amount of ocean that separates our county form the continent of Africa. Somewhere in the middle of Africa is a small landlocked country called Uganda. Somewhere in the middle of our country is a small landlocked state called Ohio. The distance between the two is indeed great, as are the standards of living, systems of government and cultures; but are we really so different? Do we feel the same things? Are our lives equally valuable?

The real gap between our cultures is not one that can be measured in miles or kilometers. The gap exists in our belief that a great physical separation from a culture makes them less real, less human. The fact is we share this humanity. This is enough to qualify for my attention. This is why I have chosen to make it my focus, over the next year, to capture and record the stories of the Ugandan people and bring them back home, to Ohio. Their stories paint pictures much different form our own, but when our stories are combined they illustrate one book, humanity’s story.

The Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa. It is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, within which it shares borders with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompassed a portion of the south of the country including the capital Kampala.

The Human Story

The title of the project is “The Human Story.” Through this film we are going to be telling the story of the Ugandan people in a creative and objective manner. We will then be coming back to Ohio and capturing stories of people right here at home. By putting our stories next to the Ugandan people’s stories we hope to accomplish four main goals.

We are hoping to…

Find many similarities that we can embrace.

Find differences that can be celebrated.

Learn how we can best share our resources.

Gain an understanding of the Ugandan life.

My team and I are excited to be traveling to Uganda to film this fall. We have received over$10,000 of the $20,000 required to make this trip a productive reality. We are not anticipating this project to make us a dime but if it does all proceeds will go towards African missions. I am honored that so many people have given us their support. We are hoping that you will be a part of this exciting adventure with us as well!
