Two Lion junior athletes placed at the Class A state track meet in Missoula last week. Megan Hannay placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 34-9, and Tanner Newell placed sixth in the javelin with a 171-4.
“Tanner did well considering the runway was wet and soggy with a makeshift repair using sand,” said Coach Joe Lewicki. “Megan also threw well both in the shot and disc. Megan had her personal best in the disc at 110 feet, placing seventh.”
Another Lion who did well but didn’t place was Jesse Thomson, who had a personal best of 19-8 in the long jump and just missed making the finals.
“Jesse was the only freshman in the long jump competition, and he placed 11th out of 20 competitors,” Lewicki said. “Not too bad for a freshman. Over the next three years we should see a lot of excitement watching Jesse compete in both running and jumping events.”
Lewicki said the past track season was one of “discovery” in trying to find a core of athletes around which to build an outstanding team. “I think we have found the core to build around with the group of athletes that performed exceptionally well at the divisional meet and advanced to state, along with those that had their personal bests at the divisional meet but failed to advance,” Lewicki said. “I don’t think it makes much difference whether we compete as an A or B school. The competition is equally tough in both classes. One advantage of going back to B is that we occasionally get to hosts districts, which we are planning on doing next year. We will also be hosting the county meet in Eureka next year.”
Lewicki also said he congratulates the Libby coaches for winning the boy’s Class title.
