The Lincoln County High School gym was hot and sticky with masses of well wishers and feverish graduates Sunday afternoon.
Ninety-one graduating seniors, ensconced in gowns of orange and white, sauntered into the gym to the classic tune of “Pomp and Circumstance.” Grant Hark gave the opening welcome, followed by a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner by Kayla VanBemmel.
Loree Campbell, speaking of the wisdoms and merits of scholarly dedication, introduced the top 10 graduates. Valedictorian addresses were given by Clete DeShazer, Alyssa Waters, and April Gorby.
“Turn Turn Turn” was fittingly harmonized by the select chorus. Amy Roberts and Natalia Utter described a series of class memories, which were met with many a chortle and chuckle.
Michael Atherton, commencement speaker, offered his words of wisdom. Whatever you do in life, he told graduates, “I won’t worry about your competence.
“But what is the center of life, what is compelling about our existence, what do we work on until we die, what is it that gives our time on earth meaning?” he questioned.
His answer was love, friendship, and family. “Remember your friends,” he said. “Treasure them always. Respect and honor your family. Share your life with them. Find love, know it when you see it, and be fearless in your pursuit,” he added. “This is a recipe I offer for lifelong happiness.”
Atherton’s speech was followed by the performance of a medley by the high school band. An impressive list of valuable scholarships and awards were presented to a number of graduates, followed by the award of diplomas by school trusteeTammy Roose.
A cheer went up with a cloud of orange and white caps. The graduating class of 2007, hatless and happy, strolled off of the stage and out into the relief of the cool spring rain.
