Tin Can Houses

Recycle old cookie tins to take on a new life as a piece art. Using a pair of cheap kitchen shears, some rivets, brads and a small handful of vintage trinkets you can transform hammered metal into a house for a fairy, a zoo for a collection of colorful plastic animals or a home for a token blessing angel. The houses have unlimited possibilities.

Embellished Canvas

Bring a photo of a family member, a friend or a favorite pet. On a small canvas, a square piece of plywood or a piece of fabric, transfer the photograph, then add some colorful papers, whimsical clip art, embossed metal, charms, assorted ephemera, maybe some poetic text to create a portrait that is worth more than a thousand words.

Sock Creatures

No sewing experience needed here. Just a few odd socks, creative pattern cutting, a couple of stray buttons, a needle and thread, and free thinking imagination and an old sock can become a genuinely unique and delightful new friend.

Journal Techniques

Keeping an art journal is a great way to grow as an artist since it is the artist's personal place to play with techniques and develop new skills while recording thoughts and memories.  However, getting started is usually the hardest part.  At Zinnia, we help you dive right in by simply using an existing sketch book or by creating a unique journal from an altered board book.  Texturing the pages is also part of the fun and the perfect way to break in your new, inspiring art journal.

Art Dolls

Folk Dolls, Paper Dolls, Mixed Media Dolls, Spice Can Dolls, Felt Dolls...welcome to the adventures of doll making.  You may find that this creative journey is in itself, the adventure; perhaps it is not the doll, but the journey to the doll that is the real magic.

Memory Boxes

Using an old cigar box and a collection of beautiful papers, nostalgic photographs and a collage of ephemera, some decoupage glue and a few sentimental doo dad’s and this becomes a special place to hold your cherished memories.

Jewelry

Our approach to making jewelry is to think outside the box.  Tin cans, game pieces, vintage buttons, beads from polymer clay, seed pods, scraps of paper, paper clay, silk ribbon, and telephone wire are just some of the ingredients you can use to create your very own wearable art.

Transfer Techniques

With a collection of odd materials and the ability to embrace happy accidents., you'll learn to use clear packing tape, clear caulk, gel mediums, solvents, and old polaroids to transfer a variety of different types of images onto a variety of different surfaces.

3 Dimensional Art /Assemblage

Assemblage is a three-dimensional work of art constructed of various, and often unusual materials, or found objects.  Some of our assemblage classes may have a personal direction such as an alter for dia de los muertos, or a lost pet that needs a place of memory, while other classes are simply for learning the process of letting go and just playing with whatever you have.  Whether you're crafty or craft-challenged, this course teaches you how to design unique assemblages into meaningful pieces of art suitable for home decor or special gifts.

Build-a-Class!

Do you have a group of friends that you’d like to take a class with?  All we need to know is who, what, and when.  With a minimum of 6 students, Zinnia will schedule a class of your choosing, at a time that’s convenient for you. (There may be some time restrictions because of classes that are already scheduled, but we’ll figure something out).
