Shaking Nations – Earthquakes, Eruptions, Famines, Floods and Plague
Page last updated: 20 November 2009 4:30 PM
Let all the earth fear the LORD; Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.
The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.
The LORD looks from heaven; He sees all the sons of men.
From the place of His dwelling He looks On all the inhabitants of the earth;
He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works.
No king is saved by the multitude of an army; A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.
Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy,
To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine. Psalm 33:8-16,18-19 (NKJV)
You will be punished by the LORD of hosts with thunder and earthquake and great noise,
With storm and tempest and the flame of devouring fire. Isaiah 29:6 (NKJV)

PACIFIC AND SOUTH EAST ASIA FACE NATURAL DISASTERS
SAMOAN TSUNAMI
The South Pacific Islands of Samoa and American Samoa have been devastated by a tsunami that hit the islands on Tuesday September 29th. An earthquake measuring 8.3 caused waves between 3 and 6 metres which hit the south-west coastlines of the two Islands. The official death toll currently stands at 144 and is expected to rise. Many of those who have died have relatives and friends in Australia. The impact of the quake/tsunami has sent Samoa into great panic and distress because of the loss of homes, food and water.
PHILIPPINES TYPHOON AND FLOODS
Tropical Storm ‘Ketsana’ hit Manila, with winds of up to 100 km an hour. 300 deaths have been recorded so far. About 380,000 people have been left homeless. Water was 8 metres deep in the worst affected areas. People have been left without water, food and power. 30 people have also died in Vietnam, and 11 in Cambodia as a result of the floods and storms. The storm brought dropped 455 millimetres of rain in just 24 hours causing extensive flooding in Manila and neighbouring provinces. The flood in Metro Manila was the worst in four decades.
EARTHQUAKES IN SUMATRA
An earthquake measuring 7.6 has devastated western Indonesia. Buildings and bridges have been destroyed in Padang, Sumatra, which has a population of 900,000 people. Thousands are trapped under rubble in Sumatra and rescue teams are working tirelessly to evacuate them. A second earthquake measuring 7.0 struck 150km south of the epicentre one day after the first shock. In excess of 1,000 people are believed to have died in the quake with the toll is expected to rise significantly.
FIORDLAND
The earthquake which struck the Fiordland region in the evening of Wednesday July 16 was the biggest since the Buller and Hawke's Bay earthquakes of 1929 and 1931.
It struck at 9:22 pm, and the epicentre was located in Dusky Sound at the south-west corner of the South Island. Its magnitude of 7.8 makes its size comparable with the Murchison earthquake of 1929 and the damaging Napier earthquake of 1931.
The main shock resulted from the Australian plate pushing beneath the Pacific plate upon which Fiordland lies. This is the largest and one of very few examples of this type of earthquake in New Zealand.
The earthquake rupture started at about 30 km depth and ruptured upwards and to the south, focusing energy offshore. The motion was more like a lurch than a snap (meaning the energy was released more slowly). This explains why the damage was much less than many people expected for this size of earthquake. The motion was slower (with lower frequency shaking) and "rolling" rather than the sharp (higher frequency shaking) movements that cause building damage; this also explains the low number of landslides.
This, and the remoteness of the epicentre, means that New Zealand has been very fortunate – if this earthquake had happened anywhere else it would have caused huge damage, even with the mitigating low frequency behaviour.
It is important for intercessors to note that the above shaking has coincided with two prophetic revelations about literal shaking of New Zealand by earthquake. Please pay attention to what they Lord might be saying through this and let us know of anything you get that you feel we should pass on.

A Vision by:Helmut Specht, International Executive Member, National Coordinators’ Conference, Jerusalem June 2008
As reported by Anne Higgins, NZ Coordinator.
Vision: “He saw the Lord put His hand under the globe in the south, Tierra del Fuego and the Tasman Sea, His other hand came down on the north above the North Island of New Zealand which reeled like a boat in a storm. It rose centrally and moved south, appearing to join the South Island.”
This caused me, Anne, great concern to hear, so I said, “What grounds do you have for validity to say such a thing?” Helmut replied that at a previous conference while praying for the coordinator he saw a vision of Sweden being swamped by a tidal wave. We know it was Bandar Arche that was devastated by the wave but Sweden’s four to five thousand tourists in the district at that time were drowned, a great calamity for the nation. Helmut said he did not know how this vision would be fulfilled but that it would be fulfilled.
Cry aloud before the Lord for your nation New Zealand in repentance on their behalf, weep and wail for mercy. I share this with you not to scare or cause panic but to intercede and prepare. NZ Civil Defence has been warning us for years but I believe this time of calamity, when it comes, will be a time of great opportunity in the Lord to minister in the Holy Spirit and help others. It may also be the very impetus required for aliyah from NZ to take place so we need to be fore-warned. Seek the Lord to be as ready as possible, trust Him, do not worry, listen and obey.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSES TO LETTER RE WORDS OF WARNING FOR NEW ZEALAND
Compiled by Don Whitfield of Prayer Hawkes Bay, 27 February 2008
I have sought to summarise the responses I have had from various sources to the requests for confirmation (or otherwise) of the prophetic words to hand concerning impending disasters coming on New Zealand. Some words have concerned blessings and encouragements and coming revival. Some of the responses I have paraphrased or summarised and from some I have extracted portions. The responses emphasise the need for prayer and repentance with awareness that impending, but generally undefined, judgements are real and as yet are in the background although may be imminent.
1. “The way is getting harder as the times progress. The training of the righteousness is more intense so that they will be ready for the increased pressure that is coming. The glory will be revealed in the time of extreme pressure. So press on knowing that the best is yet to come but the prize will be gained by those who persevere.” Adrian Watts, 7 January 2008
2. “Some years ago Cindy Jacobs called New Zealand to earnest prayer to avert God's judgement coming on the nation. We are in prayer each week night (Monday - Friday) here in Gisborne, interceding relentlessly for the Lord's MERCIFUL intervention in the affairs of our nation. … Gisborne experienced a violent earthquake on 20 December measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale. Although much damage was caused, we are also very conscious of the Lord's mercies at that time. Several earthquake experts have visited Gisborne since then and the recurring theme is, "Gisborne should have been flattened." For whatever reason, the Lord clearly moderated that terrifying event …” Peter & Julia Martin House of Prayer Gisborne
3. “… I will send against this nation an onslaught of unnatural occurrences, and it will be seen that they are out of the normal sequence of nature and will turn men’s hearts as they look and wonder at what is happening. There will be suffering and cries of anguish as they seek for help, and as their cries fall on the emptiness of the worldly things they have worshipped they must turn to Me. I would have you pray that these ungodly people, yes even those in the Government of the land, will turn to Me, the Almighty God.
Revelation 12:4 Psalm 140:8 John 17:2 “
“… Now I saw the fire being held back. There was a wall that it could not break through. There had been something built up that held back the fire. I could hear only one word: “HOLINESS”. With this word came the understanding that as the people of God pursue holiness, it is as if they are all turned with their backs to the fire, and they become the wall that holds the fire back.I saw that the pursuit of holiness allows the RIVER OF GOD to flow, it keeps His people cool and flows over those around them, a cooling, healing stream.
I saw that the people of God had become TREES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS and were beginning to release life and healing to those around them, and especially to those who were huddled together terrified of the fire.
I saw the LOST. They were no longer ignorant, but were afraid as they saw the fire approaching and also saw those who stood between them and the fire. THEIR EYES HAD BEEN OPENED TO THEIR CONDITION AND THEIR DANGER.
I saw the RIVER before my feet, it was clear and there were a few small fish swimming in it, but as I looked upstream I saw more, and larger, fish coming.
I saw God’s people STANDING in this place, and those in need coming and picking the fruit of these lives and putting it into their mouths – they were HELPING THEMSELVES to what the Lord had produced. THE HARVEST HAD BEGUN.” Judith Grobelny 31 May 1988
4. “… The streets shall overflow with blackness but the hearts of my redeemed will burst forth like suns in the darkness and shall heal many. Then shall the end come by My will and by My hand. The government shall stumble and the businessmen shall totter. The drains will break and the ground will be overturned – the mountains brought low and the valleys raised high. For I shall turn the wicked on their heads and raise up My holy ones to rule this land in glory. …Amen. Thus says the Lord.” Marion 31/12/06
5. “… It's good to know that there are others who carry the burden for our land and see the danger of God's judgment that is imminent. As you probably know, NZ is on the Southern edge of the Tectonic plate which contains Australia in the middle, India to the West, and Indonesia on it's Northern edge. The catastrophic Indonesian Tsunami was caused by that plate moving and there have been many quakes along the other sides of the plate since then. .... even another off the coast of Indonesia this week. The Southern edge of this plate passes right through the middle of both the South and the North Islands of NZ. So, if God hadn't scattered real Christians throughout our land, (as Salt and Light) He would have split it in two long ago …” Paul Simpson
6. “… The first impression I had was that there was going to be a great shaking in the nation, both physically and spiritually. The nation would experience a huge earthquake and, as this shock was being realized, this would open the nation to the glory to come upon the nation …
… The ruling authorities would be purged by fire, the leaders of the nation would experience the wrath of God and wickedness will be overthrown. The spirit of perversion and its strong men, abortion, atheism, child abuse, chronic worrying, contentions, doctrinal errors, evil actions, filthy minds, foolishness, hate, hatred of God, homosexuality, incest, lustfulness, perverting of the Gospel, pornography, rebellion, self-lovers, sexual perversions, turning the Truth, twisting of words, wounded spirits, wrong teachings, will be over thrown in the nation. …
… The scripture in Haggai 2:7-9 came to me: “And I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory, says the Lord of host (v 8)… Oh what God will do with a hungry church and community? Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for Him, for all men will be drawn to Christ.”
Len Buttner, Auckland (word from 2005)

I was in prayer and saw the islands of New Zealand in contrast to the ocean around her. The dawn was rising over the edge of the earth and I saw a scar or trench above NZ in the ocean. The Lord said, "Watch the Trench!". To the North East of the North Island is the Kermadec Trench - the position where the Pacific Plate goes under the Australasian plate forming a deep trench in the ocean floor. I believe that a significant amount of earthquake activity and volcanic activity will soon occur in the region of the Kermadec Islands – specifically on or near Raoul Island."
According to the Seismic Monitoring Organisation, there was a MAG 4.5 earthquake just south of the Kermadec Islands on January 17, 2006. Today, the 27th of January they had two: a MAG 5.0 and then a 5.2 earthquake in the island system, near Raoul Island.
The second part of that word was: "a vision of Mt Ruapehu (on the same fault line as the Kermadec Trench). The volcano was active and spewing forth smoke, steam and rock. Many were injured in the outlying ski resorts and villages. I saw a lake in the district split and water flood down the valley below it. This is a warning and a call to pray and intercede for New Zealand.
Robert Holmes, Storm-Harvest Ministries, Australia, December 23rd 1999

A MAG 6.0 quake was experienced on Raoul Island during November 2008 also. AW
An intercessor from Israel visiting NZ got this riddle from the Lord while in Te Awamutu after reading in the newspaper about a “dormant” (for 1,000 years) volcano in Chile that just erupted.
What’s Cooking? What’s boiling? What’s shaking? What’s next? – Jessie Zacharias, Israel
Now would be a good time to seek the Lord in earnest about what this might mean for us here.

AftershockWould you survive? was a follow-up documentary shown on TV on 9 October 2008 to the two-hour dramatisation set in Wellington, in the aftermath of a cataclysmic earthquake and tsunami shown on TV on 8 October. In the documentary, a family of five experienced a simulated disaster over a three day period.
If anything this documentary showed how ineffective 'being prepared' is when you are isolated. This is a key difference between "Personal Preparedness" and "Community Resilience".
Knowing your neighbours is a great start. Knowing your community is better. Resilience is not about "bouncing back" after a disaster, it is about being able to absorb the shock and continue on as normal as possible. This was a well-thought out documentary. It covered many of the important considerations for survival.
1. Water is absolutely critical. The average human will die without water after three days.
2. Water-borne illness is a major threat to people in the days following a disaster. Contaminated water, poor sanitation, and lack of hand-washing and drying facilities all contribute to this. Boiling water or putting a few drops of bleach into the water and waiting 20 minutes can kill a lot of pathogens.
3. A plan should at least contain a primary place to meet (e.g. meet at home) and then a back-up place (e.g. meet at the primary school).
4. Don't assume your local school or kindergarten will look after your child – check with them and make sure they have a plan and equipment. Check that the teachers understand the plan and are themselves prepared.
Finally, three days is NOT ENOUGH to be prepared. One month is a more realistic timeframe, but this is difficult for individuals. However, by pooling resources across an entire community can not only make survival easier, it makes the road to recovery a lot smoother.
Aftershock – a commentary
Thursday, 9 October 2008, Press Release: New Zealand Resilience Trust
Aftershock was a two-hour dramatisation set in Wellington, in the aftermath of a cataclysmic earthquake and tsunami. There were a number of false assumptions and factual errors made in this programme, although the overall portrayal of the devastation was realistic.
Key points we would like to raise, for general consideration, are as follows:
1. In a disaster so large the Regional Council would have immediate 'control' (by law) and once elevated to a national emergency then the National Controller would take charge.
2. Wellington does not have a volunteer civil defence force capable of reporting back within 13 minutes of such a cataclysm. In reality it can take up to 48 hours to establish, safety check, and staff a civil defence centre. It takes more than 13 minutes just to set up the radios!
3. Government departments in Wellington City are woefully unprepared for a disaster. We have just completed analysing business continuity plans from every government department and many do not acknowledge or plan for a major earthquake.
4. The programme totally ignored the efforts of spontaneous volunteers and the wider community, instead focusing on an army of professionals. Reality would more likely be that leaders would emerge from communities and carry on search and rescue and welfare functions separate from the Council.
5. The CEO of a local body does not tell the Controller what to do in a declared civil emergency. The Controller is the one in charge - and ultimately the one responsible for every life and piece of property in the City.
The only way to reduce the short- and long-term damage in such an event is to build resilience well in advance of any such calamity. Government should stop wasting money on traditional civil defence practices, and start talking to communities to build a resilient New Zealand.
NZRT Chief Executive Jarrod Coburn.
