State Cup

The way Eric Wise looked at it, the Tualatin Hills Neon had two good

scoring chances and converted both of them in the Oregon State Cup U17

Girls soccer final.

"It sucks to lose that way but it boils down to that," the Lake

Oswego Dynasty assistant coach said. "Those two good chances."

The Neon's goals came in overtime and allowed it to edge the Dynasty

2-1 on May 9 at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Complex in an intense

and aggressively played game that was scoreless after regulation time.

The title was the Neon's fourth in a row and it has defeated the

Dynasty each year along the way _ twice in the final and twice in a

semifinal. The heated rival Dynasty claimed the championship in the

two years before Tualatin Hills' streak.

"Now we'll try to put this behind us and continue to improve," Wise

said. "Then we'll try to get them next year."

The Dynasty struck first in overtime _ less than two minutes into the

first session _ when Melinda Madden scored from the right side after a

pass from Candice Santana. The 1-0 lead lasted until the final minute

of the same period when the Neon got even on a header by Brandy Dawson

off a corner kick.

Then, with the Dynasty showing signs of fatigue, came the game-winner

early in the second extra period. Alicia Barrett's 30-yard kick sailed

high into the left corner and just out of the reach of Dynasty goalie

Alex Boehm.

LO's best scoring chance in regulation came in the game's opening

moments when Emily Fellows retrieved a loose ball less than two yards

from the goal and twice had kicks bounce off a scrambling goalkeeper

before a defender booted the ball free of danger.

The Dynasty made an extremely impressive run in the leadup games to

the final. The Lake Oswego Soccer Club entry beat the FC Portland Sage

8-0, the FC Portland Purple 2-0 and the FC Willamette Prestige 4-0 in

preliminary games before eliminating the Oregon Rush 3-0 in the

semifinals.

Madden and Mindii Hunsaker had two goals apiece and Fellows and

Jacqui Wallis provided two assists each in the rout of the Sage.

Santana had an assist on Gigi Glaspey's goal and then scored herself

from 20 yards against the Purple. Glaspey, Ana Montoya, Fellows and

Cali Reis scored against the Prestige, all the goals coming in the

second half.

Katie Kramer, Glaspey and Montoya had the goals against the Rush but

the game's outstanding play might have been Tori Gray's early header

away from the Dynasty goal when goalie Molly Mettler was out of

position after blocking a shot. The game was scoreless at the time.

The goalkeeping of Mettler and Boehm was outstanding throughout the

playoff run with no goals allowed until the overtime connections by

the Neon.
