International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers
Five years ago Dr. Annie Sprinkle & SWOP-USA created and initiated an event to call attention to the violence that Sex Workers are subjected to because of their work. This violence is in part a result of stigma and criminalization. Moreover, because of these conditions, many victims of Sex Worker specific violence are unable to receive the legal justice and social support they deserve and are often times blamed for this violence--as if they had it coming for doing the work they do. This day, December 17th, was originally inspired to honor the victims of the Green River Killer and was created so that activist from around the globe can stage events and honor their friends and co-workers with vigils to raise awareness and call for the end of rape, assault and murder of people in this industry.
