Ok, so this is super long, and might not be worth the read for some of you. One respondent of the survey stated he learned “how vague the term Sex Worker is” and I wanted to respond, with the short version, “Yeah, it is, we are waiting for something concise yet simultaneously comprehensive (I do like W.H.I.R.D.S)” and the long version is from the forward of the evaluation report: “The author of this paper fully acknowledges the validity of all forms of sexual services in exchange for any type of compensation as work or labor, regardless of its legal, social or political status. Because of the myriad of activities that fall under this type of work, there are many names associated with workers in the Adult Entertainment & Commercial Sex Industries. For simplicity and brevity, this author will use the term Sex Worker/Adult Entertainer to include any and all variations of sexual services in exchange for any type of compensation. To help guide the context of this discussion, some basic definitions of Sex Worker/Adult Entertainer will be provided. In general, “Independent” means workers who work by himself or herself and/or without an agency/manager representative. Independent in-call/out-call means someone who works for themselves as opposed to an agency as an “escort” and they usually make house or hotel calls (out-call) or work from their home or other place (in-call). They can have ads on the Internet or in local papers and phone books. Independent massage is similar; these workers provide erotic or sensual massage, either in-call or out-call. Phone sex operators provide titillation through the phone; customers can call up and have workers “talk dirty” to them while the customers are charged via their credit card, usually by the minute. Web-cam workers usually work from home or a location that is not physically available to customers and their customers can “log-on” to the workers Internet site, for a fee, to view live streaming video or in many cases, still shots of the web-cam worker taken every 15-45 seconds. Street-based Sex Workers/Adult Entertainers solicit their customers on the streets. Some independent Sex Workers/Adult Entertainers also initiate contact with customers through bars, hotels, casinos and a variety of other public venues. “Collective” Sex Work means workers who work in groups, for agencies or in established venues. Massage parlor workers and strip club entertainers are examples of collective sex workers who work in established venues. Bondage-Discipline/Domination-Sado-Masochism (BDSM) workers, can either be independents or work for an established “dungeon,” or fantasy torture-playroom. Porn workers are adult film actors/editors/producers who either work as independents (e.g. “amateurs”) or for a production company (e.g. Raging Stallion, Colt or Falcon Studios, etc.). Underground brothels are when a group of sex workers, sometimes in co-operative or collective situations, work out of an apartment or house.
