Background


Tony Wilson has practiced   Franchising and Licensing Law since 1988 and has been a Registered Trademark Agent since 1990.  As many franchised businesses are in the hotel, restaurant and food services sector, he also regularly advises clients on Hospitality and Liquor Licensing Law.  He has written legal articles for Franchise Canada Magazine, Food Service and Hospitality Magazine, Bar and Beverage Magazine and World Trademark Review, and writes a  legal column for BC Restaurant News.


He is the author of Canada's only comprehensive legal guide for persons seeking to buy franchised businesses in Canada - " BUYING A FRANCHISE IN CANADA: Understanding & Negotiating Your Franchise Agreement ", which has sold over 3000 copies since it was published in 2005.


In addition to his legal publications, he has regularly written for the Globe and Mail and Macleans Magazine and writes an award wining humour column for Lawyers in "Bartalk" Magazine. He also writes the back page  column for Canadian Lawyer- Associates


Law Practice


Tony Wilson acts for many local and national franchisors, and prepares Franchise Agreements and Franchise Disclosure Documents required by law.  He also acts for Franchisees and Master Franchisees and Distributors, and assists them in negotiating their agreements and structuring their businesses.  As a trained mediator, he also assists clients in the mediation of franchise and related disputes.

 

He advises clients with other Intellectual Property matters, such as Software and Technology Licensing.


He is a Registered Trade Mark Agent and advises on all aspects of Trademark law, as well as Copyright Law, Trade Secrets, Confidentiality and Privacy.

 

As many franchised businesses are in the Restaurant and Food Services sector, he also regularly advises clients on Hospitality and Liquor Licensing Law.

 

He also advises in the area of author-publisher law, and has negotiated publishing book contracts on behalf of numerous authors.


Professional Activities


Tony Wilson has been Legal Advisor to the Pacific Regional Council of the Canadian Franchise Association (CFA). He has been associated with the CFA since 1988, and has been a member of the ABA Forum on Franchising.  He is a member of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC).
