What is a Cursillo?

Participation in a Cursillo Weekend offers an opportunity to examine the fundamentals of our amazing faith and what it means to be a Christian in today’s world. It essentially provides a learning experience and an opportunity to meet others and enjoy a weekend of spiritual growth and fulfilment. It is not so much a “retreat” as an “advance”! In addition to a series of presentations by clergy and lay people, there are periods of reflection and silence, music and discussion, prayer and liturgies, songs and surprises... and good food and company! More than anything, it is a joyous experience where everyone learns by sharing in a living Christian community for three days.

Origin of Cursillo

Cursillo is Spanish for “short course”. Cursillos in Christianity were started in Spain more than 50 years ago, with a focus on spiritual and pastoral renewal. Today it is a worldwide movement spread amongst many Christian denominations. More than 45 million Christians have participated in a Cursillo weekend.

The Ecumenical Cursillo in Geneva

In Geneva, we have had the pleasure of hosting an ecumenical Cursillo since 1983 in English and since 1991 in French. Each year Cursillos are in both English and French. After the weekend, there is the opportunity to meet regularly with others from many Christian communities who have shared the Cursillo experience here or elsewhere.

Some practical details

Participants are welcomed to the conference centre on Thursday evening between 18:30 and 19:00. The centre offers both single and double room accommodation. Mealtimes are informal and friendly.

The weekend finishes on Sunday evening with a light supper shared with others who have been on a Cursillo.

The Cursillo experience

  1. A better understanding of one’s faith

  2. Meeting others who ask life’s important questions

  3. Exploring the many facets of Christianity

  4. Rediscovering one’s place in the Church and in society

“Cursillo – it refreshed my faith! The fun with laughter, the peace with solitude, and the education in what it means to be a Christian today! I met a lot of great people from various churches, including my own whom I had never met before. The weekend was well planned and organized, therefore making it relaxing and allowing me the freedom to focus on God, Christianity, fellowship, and the very depths of my soul for three whole days. What a treat! It’s something that everyone should experience at least once in their life. It will always be a wonderful memory. Thanks so much.”

“My Cursillo weekend provided a safe and loving environment to explore my faith, learn from others from different traditions, and draw closer to Christ. I have experienced an unmistakable sense of renewed enthusiasm, a re- invigoration of my faith, which has given me the confidence to share it with others.”

“A jewel of an experience – I’m blinded by its brilliance! I’m tremendously grateful for that wondrous weekend!”
