Marvel approached me last year about illustrating a comic book adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand. I was interested, as The Dark Tower series has done well for Marvel and the creators. I got even more interested after reading (most of) King’s novel and researching his story.
Everything looked good until we started talking about workload and scheduling. Stephen King did not wish to abridge his book at all, and take advantage of the comics format by touching on all aspects of the story. So we were looking at a THIRTY issue series.
That’s when I bowed out.
Can you imagine spending 60 or so months on ANYTHING?
The first couple issues of The Stand comic adaptation have finally hit the stands (I think), drawn by another guy.
From what I’ve seen- It’s very different than my take was.
So I feel safe enough in posting these pages below.......
At Marvel’s request, I worked my ass off and handed these pages in to show Stephen King what I was planning for the series. As usual, I handled the pencils, inks, and colors, with John Workman on the letters.
Ultimately, all this did was waste tons of time and hurt the schedule on Marvel 1985 and various other projects I was busy on.
I’m rather proud of my work here, and figure I can at least show them in my portfolio and give you a glimpse of what The Stand could have looked like.......
A couple more layouts........
Now that Marvel 1985 is finished, here’s what’s happening in the studio right now.....
I’ve got a project in the planning stages over at Marvel, doing a Star Wars painting for Topps, and starting work as a concept designer for a film from the Hughes brothers.
Busy (which is good)....
more soon.....
